A Teacher’s Response to the Life at the CrossRoads Teachers’ Training:
Mrs. Bharati Kumar, a teacher at an international school, attended a CrossRoads Teachers’ Training and later expressed that this was a “life-changing experience”.
As her life has changed she has aspired to help her students as well as their parents. The following examples represent some of the applications she has made to her life as a teacher as a result of the CrossRoads training.
One day, after teaching the curriculum to her Class V children, Mrs. Kumar noticed a boy who kept crying. She asked the boy to stay after class to find out what was bothering him. He explained that he was living in an extended family situation and that his uncle was sexually abusing him. The boy’s parents were also going through divorce proceedings. The teacher referred this situation to the school counselor who called the boy’s father. After an initial outburst of anger, the father decided to do something about his family. The parents are presently living together and the boy is doing well, emotionally and academically. The family is now living in a separate home away from the extended family and all of them are grateful to Mrs. Kumar for her wise and courageous intervention.
A girl in Mrs. Kumar’s class was being forced into inappropriate sexual acts with the driver taking her to and from school. The teacher showed interest and compassion by intervening in the situation to bring a positive solution to this matter.
Mrs. Kumar again intervened when she discovered another student being sexually abused by a school employee. Her action put an end to the boy’s trauma.
A Parent’s Response
Lakshmi’s father, a bank manager, faced the embarrassment of having to withdraw his daughter from one of the leading schools in Bangalore because she failed to meet the grade requirement. The father, mother, and principal all had counseled Lakshmi about the necessity to study. Her boyfriend distracted Lakshmi. He came to the school gate to get her and they’d leave the campus. After going through the CrossRoads curriculum in the classroom, Lakshmi decided to put aside this relationship and concentrate on her studies instead. Her marks began to improve and she now aspires to make a significant contribution to society. Her father was so impressed with what he saw happen to his daughter that he decided to promote the “Family Connection Page”, a take home sheet distributed to parents of students in the class. This page contains a summary of what has been taught in the class and includes questions that help parents continue these discussions, thus furthering learning in the home.
